Her Story: Janis | To Each, Her Own

There's more to all of us than meets the eye.

To Each, Her Own is a celebration of who women actually are — not who they're told to be. Though we decided to use both models and real women in this campaign, they're all women who inspire us with their strength and vulnerability. Our series, Her Story, is a chance to get to know more about them.

Meet one of the six women.

Janis Wilkins, 62

TL: What’s something most people might not assume about you at first glance?

JW: “Perhaps the scope of my art.”

TL: What quality do you love most about yourself?

JW: “That I am always striving to go deeper and learn more, see more, create more. And have pretty much stopped judging myself through comparison to others.”

TL: When do you feel most beautiful and/or confident?

JW: “I love being in the ocean and doing yoga as these activities move the energy and tone the body.”

TL: What do you love most about your appearance?

JW: “I love my body primarily because it is healthy and have learned not to criticize its ‘imperfections.’”

TL: When and where are you happiest?

JW: “I would have to say in nature, whether in a heavy snowstorm, or in the ocean swimming, or in the jungle listening to birds, or in a dramatic thunderstorm.”

TL: If you could give your younger self advice, what would you tell her?

JW: “Honey, don't worry, don't judge yourself mentally or physically, you are wonderful and have your own beautiful path. You are so loved even though you may not feel this way.”

TL: What's the top song on your playlist right now?

JW: “'Here’s to Life' by Shirley Horn.”

TL: What does To Each, Her Own mean to you?

JW: “I feel this phrase embraces our own unique path in life. The beauty of aging is that I am still here with the blessed opportunity to create, resolve, grow, and truly love myself with all that encompasses.”

TL: What is your motto?

JW: “Breathe deep my love and go with the flow by gently guiding it with mindfulness.”
