Read moreWhat is Perimenopause & How Long Does It Last?

From birth to death, life goes through a series of changes. As you age, hormones fluctuate and begin the dance of the perimenopause vs menopause symptoms.
What is Perimenopause?
Literally translated as “around menopause”, perimenopause is the transitional stage that a woman goes through before the onset of menopause.
As a woman’s body winds down from the reproductive years, her ovaries gradually start to produce less estrogen. The wildly fluctuating hormones trigger different events in this perfectly normal part of the aging process.
Perimenopause is a precursor to menopause which is officially diagnosed after 12 consecutive months with no menstrual cycle, marking the end of fertility and the perimenopausal transition.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Perimenopause?
What are the first signs of perimenopause?
- As estrogen levels go down, the menstrual cycle becomes irregular and vastly unpredictable.
- Hot flashes and night sweats are random and cause sleep disruptions.
- Breasts become sore or tender as estrogen influences breast tissue sensitivity.
- Mood swings, anxiety, depression, irritability, brain fog or sudden crying spells are real hormone-driven shifts brought on by perimenopausal symptoms.
- Expect vaginal dryness, urinary changes and a reduced libido.
While these are some of the expected symptoms, each woman’s experience will still be unique as frequency and intensity will differ.
How Long Does Perimenopause Last?
Starting around the mid 40’s, perimenopause can typically last anywhere from 4 - 8 years. While it can be shorter or longer for some women, as long as you are still having periods, no matter how erratic, you are still going through perimenopause.

How to Manage Perimenopause Symptoms
With the help of your doctor, you can manage some of your symptoms.
- Hormone Therapy (HT) helps with hot flashes or night sweat.
- Low-dose antidepressants can help with mood swings and emotional regulation.
For more natural options, consider lifestyle changes like a healthy diet, exercise and better stress management.
- Sleep management, getting 7-9 hours of sleep, is particularly important especially if insomnia was one of the symptoms affecting you.
- Adopt mindfulness strategies like yoga, journaling or other stress relieving habits that you enjoy.
- Remain connected to people and groups where you can ask questions and share your experiences.
This is a normal part of the aging process but you never have to handle it alone. Having clarity and understanding will help lighten the stress that your body is currently going through. You are in transition and the more you understand, the easier you can deal with it.
When To See Your Doctor Regarding Perimenopause Symptoms
While many of the symptoms for perimenopause are normal, there are times to seek medical help.
If you find your symptoms are severely disrupting your ability to manage daily life beyond the norm, it could be a sign to talk to your doctor.
Excessively heavy or prolonged bleeding or weirdly erratic periods, signs of depression or anxiety that worsen or if you simply need reassurance that your symptoms are not hiding another underlying health issue, are all valid reasons to consider medical intervention.
